Monastery ruins Disibodenberg

Monastery ruins Disibodenberg, the domain of the Saint Hildegard from Bingen. The ancient walls of the monastery ruins at the Disibodenberg remind of the great faith in former times. Both, the Celts and Romans realized the mysticism of this religious place and visited the Disibodenberg as a place of worship. During your walk around the Disibodenberg you will experience this holy place, surrounded by meadows and woods, located at the confluence of the river Nahe and the river Glan.
Visit the Disibodenberg and follow the footsteps of Disibodus, who founded the monastery around the year 640. Discover the domain of the most famous woman of the middle age, Saint Hildegard from Bingen (1106 - 1151) who has lived many years in the heremitage of the monastery following the Benedictine nun rules during that period. She documented the "inner vision" in a book called "Scivias" always in accordance with the order "write what you see and hear". The comprehensive findings and knowledge about the middle ages are based on various reports written by Saint Hildegard.
The wall-remains of the massive abbey as well as the "Saint Mary's chapel" demonstrate the considerable building activities of the "Zisterziensers". At the monastic in 1559 all efforts to sustain the building failed. Archeological research as well as protection work are being performed since the year 1985. The Scivias-Foundation established in 1989 applies itself to the preservation and the maintenance of the ruins as well as the museum and the new chapel.
The extent of the construction work already performed has been documented in the monastery museum. Interesting findings and precious objects are presented in the museum. 22 keystones (Lombardian stonecutter art) in good condition can be admired.
Even today you can feel the spirit and the mysticism of this significant religiousness at the Disibodenberg. It is one of the most popular destinations in the Nahe region because of its monastery ruins and the museum.
